Girls Brigade Fizz Team - South Africa

GB Fizz team to South Africa, involved working with Out of Africa Mission supporting various projects in the city of George and the team worked in these projects.

Kids Stop – run by Youth for Christ

This is a centre for children giving after school and holiday care and providing activities such as sport, dance, music, craft and games. The project is run by both paid workers and volunteers. They cook meals each day for around 80 children.

Options – run by Youth for Christ

This is a teen crisis centre supporting teens in crisis. The staff includes trained health workers and counsellors along with volunteers. They also provide for food parcels for those living in poverty. They also provide HIV/AIDS testing and counselling

Blanco Township

This is an area of George where people live in poverty and there is rife unemployment. There is a pre-school – started by 4 farm owners for their workers’ children. They started the school providing everything for the children and teachers, including lunches providing lunches for the children. There are also 4 ladies in the area who run a project feeding the local families, and providing clothes for them. They cooked lunches for many families on Christmas Day. Blanco is an area of contrasts – on one side there is golf club with houses worth millions. And then the Township itself – where families live in corrugated iron shacks and pre-fab structures. There is a big alcohol problem there so not much money left for food..

We were inspired by the people we met, and the projects that we were privileged to be involved in
